When you think of football, particularly the Superbowl, what comes to mind? For some it’s the food, gatherings and the game itself. For others it’s about the half time show and other entertainment, such as the classic commercials. Whether it’s during a half time show, a memorable commercial, or on the field or off, some of the most memorable moments aren’t just the players playing, but also the players dancing!
With Superbowl Sunday just around the corner and so many viewers invested in the game and its outcome, I would like to a take a moment to look back on some of the most memorable moments from previous games (wait for it)… of players dancing! While most viewers mindlessly over indulge in fatty, processed foods and sugary drinks, some of us will shake off calories by dancing along to the half time show, as well as with the players who don’t stop moving when the ball does. Some players like Terrell Owens and Victor Cruz, have been known for their slick, stellar moves both on and off the field.
It is no secret that many competitive athletes (particularly football players) dance. Dance can give them that extra edge that puts them in a whole other league from other players. Many athletes get involved in dance (especially ballet, hip-hop and nowadays ballroom), because it helps them on the field by improving flexibility, agility, balance, stamina, and so much more. A number of current and former NFL stars have also competed in the dance arena on shows like Dancing With the Stars. Jerry Rice, Emitt Smith, Warren Sapp, Hines Ward, Lawrence Taylor, Donald Driver, Kurt Warner, Jason Tayor, Michael Irvin, Jacoby Jones and Chad Ochocinco Johnson have all danced on the show, with most doing quite well. With so many formidable athletes adding competitive dance to their training regimes and resumes, it’s no wonder why dance is becoming more of an integral part of the sports world.
