Can you dig it? Step into the sounds, moves, and wild style of the 1960s with Groove-A-Go-Go, a fun two-hour dance intensive celebrating one of the most iconic decades in American music and dance. From the sunny surf rock energy of the early 60s to the psychedelic groove of the late 60s, this workshop takes you on a magic carpet ride through the dance crazes, songs, and cultural shifts that kept people moving all decade long.
This intensive is open to all levels, and beginners are absolutely welcome. No previous dance experience is needed. Come in comfortable clothing, ready to move, jump around, and have fun. Go-go boots are very welcome if you want to get into character, but stilettos are not recommended. Dance shoes, sneakers, or barefoot will all work.
What This Intensive Is About
This isn’t a regular dance class—it’s a full 1960s dance experience packed with music, movement, and pure fun. You’ll explore classic 60s moves, see how they fit the music, and bring them together into lively group combos that feel like a party. The intensive moves from the bright, beach-party energy of early 60s Southern California to the groovy, flower-power vibe of the late 60s. Along the way, you’ll learn moves like the swim, watusi, jerk, boogaloo, alligator, and Sammy. No partner or experience needed—just show up ready to move, laugh, and dance your way through one of the most exciting decades in American pop culture.
Class Topics & Schedule
12:00 – 12:15 PM: Check-In / Registration
12:15 – 1:15 PM: Let’s Go Surfin’ Now
Kick things off with the sunny sound of early 60s surf rock. Inspired by artists like The Beach Boys, The Ventures, and The Surfaris, this section will cover fun dance crazes like the swim, the watusi, the jerk, and more, then bring them together into a playful combo that is all about movement, energy, and summer fun. Optional group filming will be available at the end of this section using your own phone.
1:15 – 2:15 PM: Age of Aquarius
The second half jumps into the psychedelic late 60s with a completely different feel. You’ll dig into groovier moves like the boogaloo, the alligator, the Sammy, and more while seeing how the music and dancing shifted with the culture. This section also ends with an optional group filming moment so you can capture the combo and take the fun with you.
