Icons of Rhythm:
Black History in Jazz & Dance
This February at ATOMIC Ballroom in Irvine, CA, we’re honoring Black History Month by celebrating the Black dancers, musicians, and innovators who built the foundation of swing dance, Lindy Hop, jazz, and social dance culture. Their creativity, resilience, and artistry didn’t just shape an era—they created the rhythm and movement that still powers dance floors today.
Throughout the month, you’ll see featured images and short stories highlighting iconic spaces and artists—from the legendary dance culture of Harlem’s swing-era ballrooms to the jazz bandleaders and vocalists whose music made swing dancing possible. This is a tribute designed to help our community learn, appreciate, and stay connected to the roots of the dances we love.
Stop by, take it in, and dance with intention. When we celebrate these icons, we keep their legacy alive—one song, one story, and one swingout at a time.
The Black Lindy Hoppers Fund
Support the Black Lindy Hoppers Fund—an organization that invests directly in Black jazz dancers and community builders through programs like Jazz Dance Grants and longer-term residencies/mentorship that help artists grow, teach, and strengthen scenes locally and internationally. If Lindy Hop and jazz dance have ever made you feel free, connected, or seen, this is a real way to give back to the culture and the people who keep it moving forward—your donation helps fuel opportunities, education, and community-rooted programming.
