Add creativity & technique to your swing dancing!
These specialty classes are designed for all levels to work on developing their improvisation inside the context of connection and lead/follow. Both beginners and advanced students are encouraged to join and dance together. You’ll walk away with new ideas for creating and sharing rhythms. The classes build on each other, but you can drop in on any week.
Shesha has been dancing and teaching Lindy hop and related swing dances for 30 years and is co-owner of ATOMIC Ballroom. These exact classes and concepts were used to train many of the advanced dancers and teachers at ATOMIC Ballroom over the years. Be sure to join the fun!
These classes are part of a three month set for April, May, and June 2026.
April: Lead & Follow Technique for Swing Dancing
Use walking improvisation games to learn how to share rhythms and directions changes and initiate and receive momentum. Learn the contrast in leading and following triple steps vs. walks vs. kicks. Discover anchor, stretch, and release.
May: Footwork & Styling for Swing Dancing
Find freedom in your footwork inside the structures and patterns of familiar swing dance moves. Discover playful patterns of footwork that fit inside the common structures of swing outs, outside turns, and inside turns. Learn to apply them both synchronized with your partner and using call-and-response.
June: Musicality & Breaks for Swing Dancing
Learn the structure of swing music to let it guide your improvisation, and learn vocabulary to hit the breaks, pauses, and rhythmic moments in the music. Master AABA structure, three and a break, blues structure vs. jazz structure, and how to tell what kind of swing music you’re dancing to. Learn to dance with skill to the music even if the song is new to you.
