I’ve been trying to keep up on my promise to go social dancing more. Having not gone regularly for months, I have defined “more” as simply once a week, consistently. (Baby steps, people! I know myself, and if I overcommit, I end up doing nothing at all.) Having not gone social dancing regularly in quite awhile, it has been difficult to get on board mentally and create a steady routine.
I decided to make Strutter’s Ball my consistent night for dancing and write that appointment into my calendar in pen! Just like people who schedule their gym workouts as non-movable appointments, I now have a regular Wednesday night commitment at Strutters. This date with myself is something that cannot be changed or postponed, cannot be one-upped by something else, cannot be re-scheduled or skipped—even when a friend invites me to a movie or a hot guy asks me to dinner. (My response: “I’m going dancing on Wednesday… but I’m free Thursday!” ) By making dancing a concrete obligation, it allows me to plan my week around that commitment, knowing that I will be in Orange on Wednesday evenings.
I also purchased an ATOMIC Ballroom Dance Pass (valid at ATOMIC, Strutter’s Ball and 1st Saturday Swing), so that paying for dances is not a weekly worry. This pass, besides being extremely convenient, is also an excellent value—$80 for 11 dances (plus a newbie punch). And since the dances have already been paid for, it feels like I’m dancing for free, so there’s really no reason not to go!
This has been my brilliant plan for adhering to my commitment to go social dancing more. Of course other snags do come up… but I’ll discuss those in a later blog.
Hope to see you all out dancing soon!
