24 Hour Cancer Dance-A-Thon 2011

Orange County’s 7th Annual 24 Hour Cancer Dance-A-Thon returns this November 12th-13th

What better way to support a good cause than by doing something you love , dancing!  And this November, swing dancers have a chance to give back to their community by participating in a 24 hour swing dance with live music, amazing DJs, performances, contests, and more.  At the end of the 24 hours, the City of Hope Hospital is handed one of those cool huge checks, for cancer research and treatment.  Join us at the 24Hour Cancer Dance-A-Thon for a good time and great cause.

What is a Dance-A-Thon anyhow?

This is a 24 hour swing dance, however, like a walk-a-thon, participants raise donations by dancing.  Before the actual dance-a-thon in November, participants register and join a team – no, you don’t need to know the people on your team, but believe me, you will know them after the dance-a-thon.  Sponsors can donate any amount on your behalf via the Dance-a-Thon website or by check.  Of course YOU don’t have to dance for 24 hours, but someone from your team must be on the dance floor during the entire 24 hours.  Your team will have a schedule of time slots so you can come and participate whenever and however long you would like.

Can anyone participate? Do I have to know how to Swing Dance?

ANYONE can participate.  Anyone can donate.  Anyone – kids, friends and families – can participate in fundraising and dancing at the event.  You don’t even have to dance or know how to dance to participate – play with the kids or just enjoy the music.  There is a minimum donation of $65 for each person wishing to be at the Dance-A-Thon, however, you needn’t donate the fee yourself, instead get sponsors to donate on your behalf.  Believe me, the bands and the cause are well worth the minimum fee – the dancing is a bonus!

For those who are new to swing dancing, this is a great opptunity to learn.  There will be classes with world class instructors and plenty of practice time while social dancing with any participant on the Dance-A-Thon floor.   Get to know the instructors, live jazz musicians and dancers in fun, friendly environment.

About the Author:

Shani Brown discovered swing dancing in the late 90s as she eased out of gymnastics into a new physical activity. When she moved to Orange County in 2000, she discovered a whole new world of Balboa and Lindyhop - and she's been obsessed ever since! When she's not hitchhiking to dance events across the country, she's probably got her nose in a book...And when she's not dancing, she's probably talking about dancing or watching dancing and being a typical dance-geek.
