Let’s Do Some WCS to Country Tunes!

For those who made the New Year’s Resolution to learn a new dance, here’s a great chance for you to get some crossover all in one night of dancing!  Add a little country music and two-step to your West Coast Swing repertoire.  Or sugar push your way through your favorite Charlie Daniels Band tune.  And don’t be afraid – many of the the social dancers in both scenes are familiar with the west coast swing and two-step basics.

Take your social dance skills further and crossover today, because variety is the Spice of Life!

West Coast SwingCountry Western , Country Two-Step:  These dances have more in common with each other than first meets the eye.  Not only do you see them at many of the same dance competitions, but you will also see them simultaneously done on the social dance floor.

Why?  Well, I think it all comes down to music.  Blues lies at the root of both Country and Rock music; both were highly popular as swing music began to fade out.  West Coast Swing took up the rhythm & blues, rock, contemporary pop, jump blues genres.  While Country Western Swing obviously went with rock, country and crossover country pop music.  See the convergence?

Somewhere between rock, pop and blues, these two dances built their basics, rhythm and timing.  And though they stylistically look quite different, they have similar building blocks, making it easy for social dancers to switch from one to another at any given song.  Country Two-Step to a pop tune.  Or West Coast Swing to country.  It’s that easy!
