To most dancers, dance is more than just a dance. It’s about community, and essentially a way of life for many. Yet for some who do not dance, it can be a mystical world of confusion – or so one would think based on some of the perplexing, sometimes down right silly questions dancers are often asked. Check out some of the common questions asked, and the answers that many dancers are thinking, but don’t always say aloud.

Rhetorical questions

Q)Why do dancers practice so much?

A) The same reason any athlete practices activities that they enjoy and strive to be good at. Practice makes perfect, right?

Q) What are leg warmers for?

A) Let me think about this one for a moment. It’s all in the name. If the name doesn’t give it away, I wouldn’t know what to say. for keeping the legs warm.

Q) Do you still have to exercise if you sweat while dancing?

A) This question makes me want to laugh out loud as I wait to hear “Just kidding” before replying with such a simple answer. Obviously dance IS a form exercise, with some styles making for a great cardio workout. So while frequent dancing is sufficient for some, others engage in other forms of exercise as well. There’s no rule for this folks.

Just down right silly

Q) Do male dancers hook up with all the female dancers in their groups?

A) Obviously every case is not the same. Some do, some don’t. Just like in any other field.

Q) Teach me how to do (name any popular dance)?

A) Come to my class where you can learn a slew of fun steps. While you’re really thinking, “Yeah right. As if I’m going to just put down my cup of coffee to break out in movement right now in the middle of this coffee shop!”

Totally Random

Q) Why do dancers get offended when they are asked if they’re cheerleaders?

A) Since some dancers (including myself, Paula Abdul and others were in fact once cheerleaders, not all of us are offended). However, for those who are, it’s like a tall person being tired of people constantly asking if they play basketball… it’s not necessarily offensive, it’s just annoying.

Q) Why do dancers have to bring dance into everything, and always talk about it constantly?

A) Because football is not fun water cooler conversation for everyone. Seriously, just like anything else in life that people enjoy and are passionate about sharing, dance is no different. When something is such a big part of your life, it’s only natural that you want to share that with everyone around you/anyone who will listen.

Do you really have to ask that?

Q) Why do dancers always show off that they can stretch heir feet above their head, especially in photos?

A) Because they can, that’s why!

Q) What’s with the mismatched colored sweat clothes, and dancers rocking the ‘hippie-homeless’ look?

A) All dancers don’t have the same style. However, for those who do work the “Flashdance” look, rumor has it that the 80’s
