If you’re like most people, you likely have a list of resolutions that you hope to accomplish and actually stick to in the New Year.

Across the board, the most commonly shared resolutions are :

  • To get healthier / eat better
  • To lose weight or just start exercising more
  • Pay off debt / save more money
  • Stop or decrease bad habits such as smoking and drinking
  • Change sleep habits
  • Travel / cross something off ones bucket list
  • Learn or try something new

Just think of how many times you have made such resolutions for yourself, or how many people in your life who have also made the same assertions. Well as common and well intended these assertions are, it is a pity that the majority of people will not only fail to succeed in accomplishing their resolutions, but will quit within just one month of beginning! There are many reasons for this, with one of the most common being that many people make too many resolutions that are not realistically achievable either within the time frame they have set, or just have unrealistic expectations all together. Another thing is that for some people a resolution is no more than a to do list of obligatory items that they know they need to do, but don’t necessarily want to do, which is why they are so often put off and then soon after abandoned.

What if more of your resolutions included things that you really wanted to do, and perhaps even felt excited about? You might be more likely to stick with them and actually enjoy them right! Whenever I meet people out and about, one of the most common things I hear from non dancers is how much they want to be able to dance but they have they two left feet, feel embarrassed, or just don’t know where to start. The great thing about learning to dance (or trying a new dance for those who already know a particular style or two), is that it can help to check off several of the above listed common resolutions (such as consistent exercise, weight loss, improving ones health, and learning something new) all at once!

If you already dance, try a new style. And if you’ve been thinking about learning to dance. or lessons of any kind, there is no better  time to start than the present; particularly when it happens to be during the New Year!

Since most New Years resolutions tend to be on the serious side, and so many of us share the same ones, I wanted to share some ‘offbeat’ resolutions that will at least help to start your new year off with a good laugh!
