What inspires you to dance?

Come out to Orange County for Inspiration Weekend 2011 on March 4, 5, and 6 (affectionately called I-Dub) for three days of a killer-diller SoCal dance experience.

Southern California is home to one of the best swing dance scenes, if not the best, in the country, and SoCal swing dancers are no strangers to travel when it comes to a great swing venue.  Now we get some of the world’s best teachers right in our own backyard, and a weekend full dance inspiration.

Shesha Marvin, owner of the ATOMIC Ballroom and swing dancer extraordinaire, talked to me about where the inspiration for I-Dub 2011 came from.  “Nikki and I started Inspiration weekend in 2007 because Orange County needed a kick in the pants, a reminder that there is this dance called “lindy hop”, that is a performance, competitive, and improvisational dance, rather than side, side, rock step with every partner.  Inspiration Weekend was intended to be a forum for dancers to try their hand at competing and to have an opportunity to actually work on their dancing.”

Lindy Hop really is my happy.

Lindy Hop really is my happy.

Shesha also talked about what inspires him to dance.  “I am inspired to dance because I’m addicted to that feeling of expressive freedom that I get when my partner and I really connect with the music.  It only happens, maybe 10 times a year, but I’m always stretching for it.”

For me, Lindy Hop is my happy.  The second I hit the dance floor, I find what I call “my happy.”  For the 2 1/2-3 minutesthat a song is playing and I’m dancing, I’m in my happy place.

Inspiration Weekend will also be donating 20% of their profits to the 24 Hour Cancer Dance-a-thon, which supports the City of Hope, so even now you’re dancing for a cause. Head to their website and register for a fun-filled, inspiring dance weekend!
