Dancing with the Stars Week 5: TV Themes

Dancing with the Stars Week 5: TV Themes

DWTS Week 5 was a hodge-podge of dances, as each pairing did a different dance, but all to some of TV’s most popular theme music.

To fill up the first half hour each judge gave an individual critique on the dancers.  While I initially dismissed it as filler, I recommend that you watch them as they picked up habits of the dancers that the television cameras may have missed.  I found it particularly educational as my ballroom dance experience is minimal and it gave me a new insight into just what the judges were seeing out on the dance floor.

Brandy and Maksim: 27 points.  Brandy and Maksim danced a lively quickstep to the theme from “Friends” and it couldn’t have suited them better – you can see in their dancing that they’ve learned how to work with each other and I agree with Len Goodman that it was their best dance to date.

Florence and Corky: 21 points. Florence and Corky danced a tango to (surprise!) the theme from “The Brady Bunch.” Unfortunately I have to agree with Bruno – that as soon as she went campy during the tango she lost me and she lost her frame – then again, she was doing the tango to “The Brady Bunch” theme.

Kurt and Anna: 24 points. Kurt and Anna had the theme from TV’s “Bewitched” and I am so impressed at all the nose-wriggling Anna did during her dance.  Done wrong and it would have just looked campy, but she made it look just adorable as the energy from their quickstep just carried through their dance.  You could see how much fun they were having and Kurt really redeemed himself from the previous week.  I agree with Carrie Ann – Kurt made it look effortless and fun, which is exactly how the quickstep is supposed to look.

Audrina and Tony: 23 points. Dancing a rumba to the theme from “The Hills” and while Audrina technically improved but the passion just wasn’t there.  I have to say, I’m not sure why they insist on dancing such a passionate dance to music that is really not suited for a rumba.  I know I would have trouble getting passion to that song.  All the judges agreed (as do I) that while she technically improved she was lacking that little extra something.

Kyle and Lacey: 20 points. Their foxtrot to the theme from “Charlie’s Angels” was an interesting choice for the foxtrot.  While I am impressed that Kyle really took to the floor and really led his partner around the dance floor, but I have to agree with Len and Bruno that the foxtrot was…not so foxy.

Rick and Cheryl: 24 points. Super cute rumba to the theme from Hill Street Blues.  I think Rick and his fellow athlete Kurt are going to give some of these leading ladies a run for their money.

Bristol and Mark: 18 points. Uhm.  Wow.  Yes, we got that you got the TV

theme from “The Monkees” but did you really need to go so literal and start out dancing in gorilla costumes?  The jive was just as expressionless as her previous performances and I haven’t seen improvement in here at all – and I’m betting she’ll be the next to go, if Kyle and Lacey can get America’s votes to stay in the competition.

Jennifer and Derek: 25 points. These two earned a respectable second place dancing the foxtrot to the theme from “Married…with Children.” Jennifer is fighting several injuries and she and Derek have the added pressure of trying to stay at the top.  The problem was that last week’s tango was just top notch and a few spots of the foxtrot were out of sync.  However, Jennifer’s still in the running for the Mirrorball Trophy – as long as she can keep her body healthy for the next five weeks.

As always, you can check out what you missed last night online and tonight we’ll see who’s leaving the dance floor for the last time.
