6 Count

The basic rhythm of the 6 county lindy hop is, Rock Step, Triple Step, Triple Step. Many of the turns in lindy hop are 6 count such as tuck turns, inside turns etc. This is a must take beginners class to survive on the social dance floor.

6 count lindy is similar to east coast swing in rhythm and shapes but unlike ECS it is characterized by slotted traveling passes and turns as well as swivels and counter balance.

As early as 1915, Southern Californians have been dancing their very own form of swing known as the Balboa. Originating in the Balboa Peninsula of Orange County, this dance incorporates intricate footwork with smooth body movements, creating a fast paced glide most enjoyed by the couple dancing the steps.

The Balboa gained worldwide popularity throughout the 30's and 40's, and is still danced today anywhere swing dancing is appreciated.

For each week in the month of July, we'll be giving you the building blocks to get you moving. If you make it each week, we'll review the basics and teach you some different moves to give you a great basic vocabulary without the commitment of a series. 

In between the classes, there will be a 15 minute Mini Dance where those that took the Beginning Lindy Hop class could practice the moves they just learned and those that are just making it for the Lindy Hop Stripped class can stretch their legs so they can hit the ground running. This is a chance to meet your classmates, practice without the stress of it being a crowded evening dance, and dance to songs where the beat is easy to find.

Lindy Hop Stripped

You know the moves but can't seem to execute them on the floor. This class will strip down the movements you just learned or already know to their pure form and give you the tools to take your dancing to the next level. There will be fun exercises and challenges to help you step up your game. This class is an in depth look at the dance but we will try to fit in a move or two for those "move hounds." Show up fifteen minutes early for our mini dance so you are warmed up and ready to go.

During this focused and intense series, you will:

- Get a taste of what it is like to be on a performance dance team

- Learn two classic jazz routines, the California Routine and Stops

- Develop gret lead and follow technique

- Work on choreography for your own, brief couple's spotlight. 

On the last day of the series, you will be given an opportunity to audition for the ATOMIC Swing Team! The date of this audition is Saturday, November 5, 2011. The audition will consist of knowing the California Routine and Stops. No partner is necessary to participate in the series. We will help you find a partner for the audition if you do not have one!

Dean Collins was an instructor, choreographer and innovator of swing. He is often credited with bringing swing dance, or The Lindy Hop, from New York to Southern California. The Dean Collins Shim Sham is his variation of the original the Shim Sham. Its very intricate and fun for your mind and feet
